Dundee Hills AVA
Winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash used the fruit from Dundee Hills Vineyard in Oregon’s Willamette Valley for the 2004 Dusky Goose Pinot noir. A relatively new AVA, formed in January 2005, the Dundee Hills is home to some of the oldest Pinot noir vines in the Willamette Valley. The vineyard site includes some of the original Pinot noir plantings from the early 1970s. With a southern exposure and clay loam soil, the vineyard is managed for low yields and has a variety of Pinot noir clones. In addition to Dusky Goose, the vineyard supplies grapes to Penner-Ash Wine Cellars, Patricia Green Cellars, R. Stuart and Adelsheim Vineyard.

“We are committed to making the highest quality wine possible,” said Penner-Ash. “We begin in the vineyard and work together with the owners and vineyard manager. Quality winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the fruit arrives at the winery. Once the fruit comes into the winery we let the wines express their unique characteristics, but we also create wines in the style that the Carters are looking for. They taste with us at every opportunity but allow us to be creative with their fruit.”

About Dusky Goose:
John and Linda Carter of Atherton, CA and Portland, OR released their first vintage, the 2002 Dusky Goose Pinot noir in 2004. Tamara Lundgren of Farmington, CT, joined the partnership in 2005. Together, they are currently releasing the 2004 vintage with a limited production of 770 cases. The Carter family named the wine for the rare Dusky Goose that migrates to the Willamette Valley from Alaska each winter. The 2003 Dusky Goose Pinot noir has earned accolades from coast to coast, including “Best North American Red” in Spring 2006 by E&R Wines in Portland. The 2003 vintage was also selected to accompany the Academie Culinaire dinner at Carafe Bistro in Portland and a James Beard dinner in New York City with Vitaly and Kimberly Paley of Paley’s Place. “The wine community is eagerly anticipating the release of the 2004 vintage,” said Nancy Garvin, Dusky Goose brand manager.
